Welcome to Cambridge Modernism

Welcome to the Cambridge Modernism website. It aims to be the first port of call for news and information about modernist architecture in Cambridge, UK.

This site focuses on the historical period between the First and Second World War — the period known to the French as “l’entre-deux-guerres”. It showcases classic, purist modernism of the Mies Van Der Rohe variety as well as the more common-or-garden varieties of 1930s modernism which are sometimes known as “moderne”, shading into Art Deco. (For a lengthier discussion of how to define modernism, see the catalogue from the 2006 exhibition on Modernism at the V&A Museum in London). This site does not claim to be exhaustive, but it is intended to illustrate the full range of modernism’s impact on the built environment: including residential, educational, public sector, and commercial buildings.

I hope you enjoy exploring the site. This really is just the beginning – the site will grow and develop over time. Architectural biographies and house profiles are next on my to-do list. In the meantime, please add Cambridge Modernism to your bookmarks, and feel free to contact me with any comments or suggestions about the site design or content.
