Map

A Google-powered map of Cambridge, showing the location of significant modernist architectural landmarks, as well as offering some examples of historical architectural context (e.g. 1930s “ribbon development” on Chesterton Road). The map is not exhaustive, and should be supplemented by other parts of this site (see the Resources page), and by other online and print resources such as Cambridge New Architecture, by Nicholas Taylor and Philip Booth (third edition, 1970, Leonard Hill Books).

As Robert Bell Rettig wrote in his architectural guide to the “other” Cambridge (nr. Boston, Massachusetts), “Inclusion … does not mean that a building is among the major monuments of Cambridge architecture … nor does lack of inclusion mean that a building is unimportant.”

Please note: there are currently some problems with the way that “clickable” map labels are displayed in the small inline version of the map. Apologies – I’m working on it. For the moment, please click on the “View Larger map” link to access the full functionality.

More interactive map tools for this site are in the pipeline – stay tuned for news.
